How many doctors can say that the hospital where they were born happens to be the institution where they attended undergraduate school, medical school, and performed their residency? But Stanford University is just that for the aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Carolyn Chang, who spent her formative years in between growing up in Tennessee. “I always knew I wanted to do surgery,” Chang says of her return to Palo Alto and entrée into medicine.

You won’t catch Dr. Carolyn Chang wearing one of those drab institutional lab coats when consulting with her patients. The Pacific Heights plastic surgeon is known for her chic outfits and designer shoes she wears everywhere except the OR.
“I have to wear scrubs three or four days a week,” she says. “But when I see patients, I never wear a white coat. Never.” She loves to create symmetry in her clothing – to tell a color story, maybe, or play with drape and flow.

Don’t ask Dr. Chang about Dr. 90210. “The public is fascinated by active cutting. It’s a gross fascination.” That’s not what drew Chang as a medical student. “I’m visual, and I love using my hands. In medical school, I told them I wanted to do surgery, and they paired me with the only woman in Stanford’s plastic surgery department. At that time, only 7 percent of board-certified plastic surgeons were women.”
