About Dr. Chang

Dr. Carolyn Chang is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in San Francisco. She is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Chang serves as the Vice-Chairman for the Department of Plastic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center.

Dr. Chang graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree with honors from Stanford University and received her medical degree from Stanford University Medical School, where she was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. She continued at Stanford University Medical Center for her general surgery and plastic surgery training. She then completed an additional advanced surgical fellowship at New York University, and a second year of further specialization in the field of cosmetic surgery under the guidance of Dr. John Q. Owsley, one of the pioneers of the modern SMAS facelift. She has the honor of being the first woman to be chosen for this prestigious fellowship.

As one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier plastic surgeons, she has the honor of being included in Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors and the Best Doctors in America. Dr. Chang is one of the few plastic surgeons in the area to be included on both of these prestigious, peer-reviewed national lists. She is also chosen annually by her surgical peers to be included in Marin Magazine’s 415 Top Doctors list, and is one of San Francisco Magazine’s Top Doctors.  Readers of the Nob Hill Gazette also voted Dr. Chang as San Francisco’s Best Plastic Surgeon.

Dr. Chang specializes in cosmetic surgery. Her particular areas of expertise include the natural SMAS-Platysma facelift and preventative facial surgery for the younger patient. She also specializes in breast surgery and body contouring and currently performs one of the largest volumes in the area of post-pregnancy rejuvenation, short scar breast lifts and reductions, and the natural breast augmentation.

Dr. Chang’s aesthetic judgments and superb surgical skills have drawn attention from television producers, beauty editors, skin care companies, and professional associations who call upon her for her knowledge and expertise in plastic surgery. CNN, The Doctors, and National Geographic have recently sought her professional expertise for their programming. Many magazine editors have also recognized Dr. Chang as a leader in her field of plastic surgery. For example, Harper’s Bazaar Magazine listed her in their Hot List of the 24 Best Beauty Surgeons, and W Magazine named her one of America’s Top Doctors for Revisional Plastic Surgery. Juice Beauty, a national skin care company known for having the highest organic standards in the industry recently invited Dr. Chang to be a co-developer of products and to serve as their Scientific Advisor. Dr. Chang is an invited lecturer both locally and nationally on a wide range of topics in the field of aesthetic surgery. She is published in the professional and lay literature related to these topics and has been an instructor for plastic surgery courses at national meetings.  She currently participates in resident and medical student teaching at California Pacific Medical Center.

Dr. Chang is a long-time resident of the Bay Area and is committed to the betterment of her community.  She is active philanthropically and is a committed patron of the arts.  She is a Board member of the San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary fundraising organization, and recently served as Dinner Chair for the ballet’s opening night gala. Dr. Chang serves as Vice President of the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation Board and is on the advisory committee for the development of California Pacific Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.  In addition, she provides breast reconstruction for California Pacific Medical Center’s African American Breast Health Program, a service for underserved women in need of breast cancer treatments. Dr. Chang was recently awarded the Women of Excellence Award from the Ivy AKAdemy Foundation of San Francisco for her work with breast cancer patients.

Dr. Chang lives in San Francisco, with her husband Patrick and their children, James and Jemma.
